Well, I have to say that the recent cold snap has sped things up on Chestnut Ridge, WV and even in the Morgantown area. While the color is still a small percentage of the whole there are some bright crimson reds, some maroons, oranges and yellows sprouting up. Even in Morgantown I'm seeing these colors. Canaan Valley has been really cold - I saw a report of 19°F. I'm probably heading to Roaring Plains either next week or the week after. Don't want to get in there too late this year or it will be gone.
Arf, have you seen any more change?

Things are changing rapidly around the ANF/Elk State Forest area. Lots of colors are out along the roads on the plateau. I drove Rt 59 from Warren and 6/155 to Port Allegany and south this morning and there are areas where all the leaves are changed and some where it's still a low amount. Overall I'd say the plateau is around 25-50% changed with pockets of peak color. It would be a good weekend to make a drive up in the PA Wilds. An ideal trip might be St Marys-120-Emporium-46-Smethport-6-Coudy-44-Jersey Shore. Maybe follow 6 all the way to Mansfield instead. I'd imagine Pine Creek will be in color in the next two weeks.

The maples are turning a little more each day. But I'm in an area heavy in oak and hickory and those are still mostly green.

Thanks for the update. You might see me up that way this weekend as well. I can't miss the colors again this year.

I was in Quehanna on Monday and things were pretty much peak in the areas with maples. Oaks will be a while yet. The ANF area is pretty much the same. Unfortunately, rain and wind could knock a lot of leaves off already so we will see if we get a secondary peak or if things hang on from the first color peak. It certainly was pretty this past weekend; the earliest I've seen peak colors in a while.

I hiked in Allegheny National Forest on Wednesday and Quehanna Wild Area on Thursday. Foliage is coming along nicely in northern Pennsylvania...
Minister Creek Overlook (Allegheny National Forest) - 9/30/20
Beaver Run Dam Area (Quehanna Wild Area) - 10/1/20
Leaves were a bit greener south of I-80 as of a few days ago...
Shorb's Summit on Jack's Mountain - 10/1/20

10/4/2020 - I made the stupid fateful decision to visit Spruce Knob, then Dolly Sods, then Blackwater fallls SP Saturday. Colors are just starting. Really pretty if you like the early stages, but unbelievable crowds. See my other post.

It's also starting to turn in Michaux State Forest, though still at least half-green. Sassafras turning yellow and reed, Beech red, maples starting to redden. Only saw three people in a six mile hike. Plenty of trailheads looked busy, however.

We're having some of the best colors in WV in years. Canaan Valley is probably within a week of peak and the rest of the northern half of the state is really nice. Chestnut Ridge/Coopers Rock is still probably at least a week away from peak. The colors are brilliant but there is still a lot of green. I would like to hear from some folks what it's like on the WV/VA border like Wardensville, Big Schloss, etc.

The Mill Mountain (Big Schloss) / Trout Run Valley is hit and miss: some pockets are at full peak, while others are 1-2wks off. I'd say one 1wk (overall) to peak.

Everyone is aware that this is one of the best fall foliage seasons in years. However, I would say that Chestnut Ridge (Coopers Rock State Forest and Snake Hill WMA) are basically at peak. There are still quite a few oaks (not all) that are green along with tulip trees. The reason I'm calling it peak is due to leaf drop. We've had a few windy days and today is super windy. Leaves are coming down fast and the maples are starting to go bare. Get out and see them while you can.

I personally consider this to be peak fall: yeah, we still have some green trees, but by the time they turn others would have shed their leaves. I prefer green to bare trees!

It's that time of the year again to revive this thread that's been going on for years. This board doesn't get a lot of activity but we can always count on this thread to light up. So, anything changing out there yet? I saw that Canaan Valley had it's first frost with a 31° morning and a few leaves are changing. Early Sept was a bit wetter than usual but the higher elevations have stayed below 80° all month. The forecasts are for another good foliage season. Okay, chime in folks.
