Took a drive yesterday. Starting to see a few maroons on Chestnut Ridge/Coopers Rock SF. Hit up the PA highpoint, Mt. Davis and from the observation tower there were a few more maroons and purples but still only a few percent of the whole.

Some colors along the roads are popping up here and it's getting a bit spotty in the higher areas east of the Allegheny River. I'm expecting some decent color on my trip to Quehanna that I hope to get in a week from now.

I did my typical fall kick-off trip yesterday: Bear Rocks, followed by a hike in Dolly Sods, and then a tour of Canaan Valley (checked out Blackwater Falls and Canaan Valley). The blueberry/huckleberry? bushes in Dolly Sods were prime, while the hardwoods - what little of them are there in Dolly Sods North - were close to prime. Canaan Mountain was close to prime, maybe another week. Blackwater Canyon's northern reaches were beginning to look good, but the mid-lower canyon was still very green.

Canaan Valley Resort posts a video on Instagram every Friday on Fall foliage. Still looks to be a week from prime in general. I may be in the area this Friday or soon thereafter and will report back.

Report from Canaan Valley area and the drive there. Chestnut Ridge WV (Coopers Rock SF & Snake Hill WMA) are still mostly green with just a smattering of color. Preston and Garrett Counties are disappointing with things still green with little outstanding color. The first color of any note was on Backbone Mt but after topping it and dropping towards Thomas, WV, the trees started getting bare - not a good sign. Thomas and Davis were substandard also but then things started picking up and Canaan Heights was pretty nice and dropping into the Valley showed very nice colors that were probably a bit past peak with some bare trees in the mix. I was going to head up to the Blackbird Knob trail at Dolly Sods but changed my mind because of what I saw. Bald Knob, Weiss Knob and Cabin Mountain were essentially bare of leaves. Oh, there were a few here and there but it appears to be over at the higher elevations. I decided to hike in Canaan Valley State Park and that was decent. It was a bit of a mixed bag with barren areas in the swampy areas and full leaf on in the more wooded areas. In fact, in the wooded areas the understory was still solid green with yellows and oranges in the overstory. After I left I drove back the Canaan Loop Rd for a ways to check it out and while it has a lot of conifers the hardwoods mixed in were largely barren. Afterwards I headed to Blackwater Falls State Park and it was here that I found the best color of the day. The canyon from Pendleton Point was very nice with a lot of color and almost no leaf drop. The park itself was pretty nice also. If you're heading out in northern WV in the next week or so and want some color you'll need to head to lower elevations to get it. Overall, 2021's color has been far inferior to the excellent color of last year.

I was in the Dolly Sods Wilderness from Oct. 12-15 and considered the foliage to be of pretty decent coloration, a touch past peak (most of the blueberry bushes has lost their leaves). I had quite nice weather, bar a brief spat of rain early on the 13th. I would see 5-7 other folks/day - I stayed away from the Bear Rocks area...
I drove across WV along I-64 from the VA/WV line to Charleston and back on Tuesday, Oct. 26, and the foliage was spectacular, up to 2600', and was holding up nicely in the strong wind. Hopefully it'll last for a couple more weeks.

Chestnut Ridge WV/PA (Coopers Rock SF, Snake Hill WMA, Quebec Run Wild Area) is at peak or maybe just a bit past. We've had good colors this week but the rain and wind are taking a bit of a toll but things are hanging on well. The Laurel Highlands are likely in the same boat or just a bit further past. I'll be up there on Monday. Later next week we are supposed to drop into the upper 20's and lower 30's several mornings with our first snow forecast. That will likely hasten the demise. Get out and enjoy the fall.

I hiked in the Wolf Rocks/Laurel Summit area of the Laurel Highlands on Monday and color was still very nice. Some areas were gorgeous along Linn Run and higher areas did have some bald areas but overall very good. It will probably hold through this week but we've had our first frost and snow so it won't be long.

Fall colors are prime in the Kinzua Beach area of Allegheny National Forest right now. This weekend would be a good time to visit if you're within driving distance. Areas further east in Northern Pennsylvania are spottier. Ulysses, PA is noticeably past peak while the Ansonia/Wellsboro area have a little more leaves on the trees. Some pics from yesterday... I hate to post on this thread so soon in the year but I've already seen a few trees turning this year. We've had a cool spell that has been more fall-like than summer and indeed, we had very little real summer. Hopefully, these trees are just flukes.

Saw my first changing leaves of the year at Carlton Hill Multiple Use Area, NY yesterday. Leaves were 99% green and maybe 1% yellow/orange in the southern end of the park where I hiked and mountain biked.
Next weekend or the weekend after, I may be driving out to Delaware and Eastern Pennsylvania and will report any changes I see out that way.

I just read an article regarding maple trees that will shut down some or all of their leaves late in summer to conserve moisture.
We've had a really hot/humid summer here around Warrenton va, and its really dry right now. Hoping it will turn soon enough!

I visited Canaan Mountain, West Virginia, yesterday. Everything was still green there and towards Otter Creek. There was a hint of color in some of the trees in Canaan Valley, but nothing I wouldn't expect at this time of the year.

More trees turning on Chestnut Ridge/Coopers Rock. Unlike va3pinner we HAVE NOT had a dry period at all this year. July was very wet and then August went and was even wetter and Labor Day was a total washout with about 1.5" of rain. I was in Erie, PA a week ago and leaves up that way are changing even more. I feel an early fall approaching.
