Managed a quick overnighter to the high ridges on the WV/VA (Pocohontas Cty/Highland Cty) border, in GW NF. Beautiful color up there, up at 4000' - near peak, I would guess. Traveling back east on Hwy. 250, progressively lower amounts of color on the mountains once past Monterey, VA - so, spectacular on Allegheny Mtn to very so-so on Shenandoah Mtn (& mostly non-existent on the Blue Ridge)...

The Shawangunks in New York State are showing signs of color this past weekend. Most probably a week from peak Fall color. Along the Millbrook Mountain Carriage Road

After driving around West Virginia yesterday, I think Canaan Valley might be prime right now (I didn't drive there, but the Mount Storm area was prime), while the North Fork Mountain/Seneca Rocks area and points east are a week from prime.

SGL 57 from two weekends ago, great Fall this year. The higher elevations of 57 almost always have good colors due to the diversity of tree species. http://instagr.am/p/B3w_b-4lewb

Chestnut Ridge suddenly lit up today, colors are brilliant. The maples have come alive with numerous yellows, oranges, and even some crimson red‘s. It’s amazing the difference one week can make. I should be down in the West Virginia mountains later this week and can report back what’s going on down there. Today’s colors are brilliant despite the bright sunshine which usually washes out colors.

I was out hiking on North Fork Mountain yesterday and it is peaking. This was the best fall foliage that I've seen on the Mon in years. I would say that barring any storms the color will hold up there for a week at most. Get out and see it while you can. Spruce Mt and by inference, Seneca Creek should still be good also. Canaan Valley, Canaan Mt., Dolly Sods and Roaring Plains are bare - the leaves are gone. Don't go there for color. I won't get out again until Veteran's Day and will likely head even further east hoping for a last gasp of color then.

It's uneven here in the ANF...the plateau around Bradford and Kane is mostly bare, with just some beech to brighten your days.
Further west, it's decent in the lower areas around the Allegheny Reservoir with peak probably early this week before the rains.
Around Warren it's getting good although the higher elevations are past peak.
A drive this weekend in the valleys west of Warren would probably be beautiful but anywhere up high would be more barren. Hiking around the reservoir would be nice, with the rest of the ANF past peak or bare.

Catoctin Mountain Park, in Maryland (where the Presidential retreat of Camp David is located), was approaching peak fall foliage yesterday: I like the onset of peak foliage more than right after, so I couldn't have asked for more from yesterday. Some spectacular colors.

Chestnut Ridge is now slightly past peak. We had fantastic colors on Thursday and Friday. The rain and wind over the weekend probably knocked down near 40% of the leaves. Colors are still great but there are some bare trees. Lower elevations are actually worse with leaf drop. This will probably be the last good week for Coopers Rock, Snake Hill WMA and Quebec Run. Get out and enjoy it.
Does anyone have a report from the WV/VA border area - somewhere near Big Schloss for instance?

Michaux State Forest yesterday, and while most oaks still have their leaves, the maples are largely bare. Thursday's storm likely brought an abrupt end to the peak colors.

Did a decent hike at Coopers Rock State Forest yesterday to see how thing fared since the heavy rain and wind over Halloween. The drive up was not that encouraging but I could see that not all was lost. Once I got in the woods things were a bit better. The oaks with their ever cling leaves were still fairly full although the leaves were fully brown. On getting deeper in I could see more color in the understory. The yellow and reds of the beech and birch were still shining albeit a bit dulled by age. They still provided some nice color. A few maples still cling on but don't go looking for those. Tulip trees have yet to fully turn though their leaves of a green and yellow mixture are falling. The underbrush is still green with greenbriers and the walking was great with a carpet of leaves to swish through. I love walking through the leaves so this is still a great time of the year to get out and enjoy the woods.
I guess no one from the Virginia area is posting anymore. From webcams I can see that North Fork Mt and Spruce Mt are basically bare. The cameras I can see in VA show basically the same conditions. So, unless you're willing to go down to Mt Rogers or further the fall foliage season in the Mid-Atlantic is on it's final legs. Ready for snow?

Well folks (or those who are left), it's that time of the year again. Let's start hearing those fall foliage reports. I'll start. Chestnut Ridge is showing a few spotty trees with a bit of color. I was out in Western MD yesterday and the Green Ridge St Forest is similar w/ just a few trees starting to turn. Canaan Valley and Garret Co. MD but had some light frost on the 15th. I'm finding that Instagram posts from the counties and locales like Canaan Valley SP, Whitegrass, etc. are useful for finding some info. Anyone seeing anything else yet?

Up here in PA, the maples along the roads are starting to change, as are the black gums and other understory trees in some of the higher elevations. I was in Quehanna earlier this week and was surprised how little color there was so far. I'd imagine the lows in the 30s this week and upcoming should help speed things along. In the ANF, things are starting along RT 59 a little. The Elk State Forest has some spotty color north of St Marys. I'd expect an earlier peak this year, perhaps the first week of October, with maybe some colors muted as it's been extremely dry in northcentral PA.

Unsurprisingly it's still very green down in Michaux. The black gum (and a few sassafras) are starting to change, but that's about it.

Well, the 6+ foot-high grass in Michaux where I trudged thru had yellowed significantly. But yeah, otherwise still rather green.

3 mornings in a row in the 30's here in northern WV. A few more maples are showing yellow and maroon and dogways are going maroon also. Hoping to hit the mountains in a week and see what's going on.

I drove all the mountains from Upper Tract to Elkins and back today. Not much in the way of color yet. A little red on the Maples on the western slope of Rich Mountain.
These cold nights may or may not get it going.
