Plateau Mountain, Catskills NY
Saturday morning found me in New York State’s Catskill Mountains. Decided to take an out and back hike of Plateau Mountain.
Plateau Mountain at 3840 of elevation comes in at number 12 on the Catskill’s 3500 club list of the 35 highest peaks in the Catskill’s. Parked at the Dale Road trailhead parking area for the Roaring Kill Trail.
Did the 11.5 +/- in and out hike using the following trails. Roaring Kill trail (yellow blazes) for .25 miles to junction of the Mink Hollow trail. Right onto the Mink Hollow trail (blue blazes) for approx. 2.5 miles to the junction of the Devils Path. Right on the Devils Path (red blazes) for 1.2 miles to the high point of Plateau. Continued across the top of the long Balsam Fir covered peak to the two lookouts at its western end (Danny’s Lookout and Orchid Point). And then reversed course back the same trails.
The climb up the east side of Plateau tends to be very steep at some points. Particularly after passing by the 3500 foot elevation sign. I so love the walk across the long mostly flat top of the mountain, with its constant cover of Balsam Fir and the associated scent they have.
Seen a doe lay down along the Mink Hollow trail. After I startled him/her. Just froze in place. Was no longer there when I hiked back out.
Turned out to be a great hike on a beautiful Saturday
A few pictures from the day:
Trailhead Sign
Fawn laying down
Object of todays hike - Plateau
Sugarloaf through the trees
View from Orchid Point
Hunter Mountain from Orchid Point
Mountain Wildflower
View from Danny's Lookout
Roundtop and Katterskill High Top from viewpoint at east and of Plateau
Trail across Plateau through Balsam Fir Tunnel
