My first trip to the Cranberry area. Loved it! Just wish it wasn't so far! Started at the CMNC, great place to visit. Took Pocahontas to Frosty Gap Trail. Pocahontas had the only blow-downs we saw, but the worst part of the trail was the stinging nettles. Campsite was nice. Water was abundant. Frosty Gap trail starts out and finishes nice, byut for the most part it was a forest road walk. We were accompanied by butterflies most of the way though. Got to Cowpasture Trail and the Glades early day 2. Cowpasture Trail is now one of my favorites It ends at a huge meadow that used to be the site of a prison! Left the trail happy campers! And stopped by the Falls of Hills Creek on the way out. Great weekend!

Cowpasture was alive with bees and other insects when we hiked it this same time of year. Especially after you crossed the bridge and walked the edge of the woods. It sounded like you were in the middle of a massive swarm. About the drive there,,, it's even two hours from my place in Upper Tract, WV. Loooong drive from my place in Ohio, probably close to six hours. We're going to try to get in there the early October. Got to look up that special early bear season and see when that is first.

We had some bugs, but it wasn't bad at all, mostly flies. The only bees we saw were bumble bees and they were glued to the flowers and had no interest in us. I am planning on going back, but probably doing Big Beechy and one of the Fork trails, since I have not been there before.

You can do Big Beechy and North Fork for a longer one if you go over Laurelly Branch. North-South is ok if you just want to get out. It's pretty boring and has no water.

Bear early season for Nicholas, Greenbrier, Pocahontas and Webster: Sept. 19 thru Sept 25th Season for Kanawha, fayette, boone and Raleigh: October 3 thru October 9
so, early October tips to cranberry should be good.
It is also early bear season in Preston, Tucker, Randolph, Grant, Pendleton & Hardy counties. So, I won't be heading to the woods this week,

Bear hunters never really bother me, 90% of them never leave their trucks, and drive around like idiots with their dog tracking things out the window. Bear hunters are a strange breed.
