Tyler Arboretum, Minshall trail loop
This past Sunday I decided to hike some place new for me. I have never been too the Tyler Arboretum and since I was heading to New Jersey later that evening it fill the bill perfectly.
There are approximately 17 miles of trails within the confines of the 650 acres of land that comprise the Arboretum.
Decided I’d hike the longest trail. Being the white blazed Minshall Trail at 7.4 miles. After paying the $ 11.00 adult admission I set off thru the fenced in portion of the Arboretum. Passing by some interesting tree houses and a butterfly house,to gate number one and the Rocky Run Trail
There are a total of seven gates in the perimeter fence that allow hikers access to the trails. And keep the deer population outside the confines of the planted area of the Arboretum.
I used a short portion of the Rocky Run Trail to access the white blazed Minshall trail. The trail started off as a wide dirt or grass road with some minor up and downs. And became a narrow dirt single-track
just prior to the crossing of Rocky Run. I found several areas of the trail very scenic. Especially at the crossing of Rocky Run with its large boulders and cascades.
Too bad the water levels were so low, as it would have been even better. Plus in the open woods on the south side of the Barren Road Crossing. Another really neat thing to see near the end of my hike, was the fenced in enclosure where they have reestablished an American Chestnut Nursery.
Entered back into the fenced area by using the Pink Hill trail and gate 7. Then walked along the paved trails inside back to the gate. Passing by one of the largest Tulip tress I’ve ever seen.
Overall a very nice place to take a hike on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Seen a few deer during my hike, along with a frog near Rocky Run. But very few other people (two hikers) outside the fenced in area.
