The Lehigh Gap suffered from pollution due from zinc smelting which denuded the forest and left the mountain bare like a moonscape. Years of rehabilitation has transformed this once stark landscape into meadows, savannas, and young forests with grasses and wildflowers. There were expansive views for miles from open ridges and meadows. I hiked down into the gap over some rock scrambles famous with Appalachian Trail hikers. I also stopped by the impressive Lehigh Gap Nature Center with its wildflowers and a shed with a living roof. The nature center has miles of trails; be sure to hike the impressive North Trail with its excellent views from mountain top meadows.
