Never heard that story before, indeed it is a good read. I'll have to read a bit more on that guys family, might be related to me or someone I know, Last names have a tendency to stick around for a looong time up here in the mountains.
I'd have to go through and see if I can place that area on a topo, Now that I looked at a map, would this be somewhere in dolly sods, or in canaan valley itself?? if its in the valley, the swamp probably done swallowed it up many moons ago.

Just from the maps in the article and a cursory examination of topo maps I would say the wreck site is somewhere south of the end of A Frame Road though I can't be sure right now how far. This is in Canaan Valley NWR and as jnk says most signs have likely been swallowed by the swamp though the old railroad grades are still visible.

Yes I do believe it is in the valley. And, Jnk, if he is related to you, it sounds like you have a long and interesting family history!

in the book Tumult on the Mountain there's a bit about Fred Viering,on page 59; also in A Dolly Sods North and Blackwater Companion, page 77 there's a map showing the wreck site, and on page 85-86 a story about him.i like to see this site too
