Dunnfield Creek and Appalachian Trail Loop
Sunday July 19, 2015
This past Sunday I wanted to do a hike that had streams and waterfalls. So I decided on doing the 8 mile loop combining the Dunnfield Creek Trail to Sunfish Pond with a return along the white blazes of the Appalachian Trail.
Since the forecast for Sunday called for clear skies. But with a heat advisory in effect. I figured I try to get an early start. Arrived at the Dunnfield Creek/AT trailhead parking area on the west bound side of Interstate 80 at 7:15 am. And was off on the hike by 7:30 pm. When I arrived I was one of the ten or so cars in the rather large parking area.
The early morning air temperature was rising quickly. But as I hiked up the hollow of the Dunnfield Creek. The temperature was probably 15 degrees cooler that the surrounding air. Causing heavy fog at some points along the first 2.5 miles of the trail. Till the point where it leaves the drainage, and begins the climb to Sunfish Pond.
Hung at Sunfish Pond for a bit. Talking with a couple of AT thru hikers, concerning the fact that the rocks on the trail, do not end at the Pennsylvania line. Headed south on the AT back to the parking area, passing by several large groups of day hikers heading to Sunfish Pond. Along with plenty of thru hikers. A nice breeze was blowing on the way out, plus it was mostly a downhill hike. Making it a pleasant hike back out.
Got back to the now full parking area at 10:30. Three hours after I started there was no parking left in either the west bound or east bound I-80 parking areas.
Here is the hike through some pictures:
Dunnfield Creek Waterfall
Ground fog along Dunnfield Creek Trail
Frog along the trail
Dew covered web along Dunnfield Creek Trail
Foggy Dunnfield Creek
Sunfish Pond
