Took a short overnight hike in the Canaan Mtn area this weekend. Since Fire Trail 6 was being maintained and it was advised to not use it, I decided to hike out via Fire Trail 3. I have hiked this trail twice; one with some snow still on it and once with several friends, so I may just not have noticed. Question: what trail crosses fire trail 3 about half way. The "trail" crossing is at the area of Fire trail 3 that has a flat rock as a bridge. The trail goes both directions. I followed it one way for about 1/8 mile thinking it might lead to a campsite, although the trail looks way too good as a campsite trail. The trail looks to be maintained and did have a few cairns on it. There were bike tracks in it too. I checked my 7th edition of the Hiking the Mon national forest guide to see if the trail was the old Fire Lane Split trail, but that trail seems to only be from Lindy run trail to Davis trail. Anyone know where this trail leads? Might be a reason for me to head back up to Canaan Mtn .

I think it's just labeled "jeep trail" on my topo. I never hike that end of the mountain, so IDK.

I'm not familiar with the area, but the Strava Heatmap seems to have the answer.

CR,
I have every edition of the Mon NF hiking guide and your trail is not listed in any of them. I suspect that it is a mountain bike use trail based on the old jeep road arf mentioned. The Strava heat map mostly shows bike trails.

You know, the more I look at that Strava heat map the more I'm convinced that your mystery trail is just a continuation of the old Fire Lane Split Trail (old TR# 111). You can also see the track of old Fire Trail 2 if you play around with the settings some.

Sounds to me like I have a really good reason to go hiking! I have not explored Canaan Mtn area enough, so this is my excuse. Thanks all for your input. Heck, now all of us have a reason to check it out.
I had never heard of Strava heat map. I like it. Vdeal, I think you might be right about it being a continuation of the firelane split trail. It certainly is in the right place. I like this area, not a lot of people. I saw no one, except on the Loop road. Saw more bear & deer tracks than people tracks. It was a very quiet night. The only sound was the wind in the trees.
