Has anybody been to Laurel Fork Special Management Area in Virginia lately? I'm trying to get some idea of water levels. Streams have been very low for a while now and I don't want to go if it's largely dried up. Thanks.

Can't say. I won't be back in the general area until next week. Seems like the area has been getting regular rain though.
There was plenty of water in it when we hiked it last fall and that's normally the dry season in the mountains over that way. It's a major tributary to the North Fork of the South Branch.

Yeah, the first stream gauge downstream is at Cabins on the NF and it's normal right now but it was below normal a few days ago. I'll keep an eye on it but was hoping for some first hand reports but that area is so far off most people's radar that I knew it was a shot in the dark.

Also, anyone who's been to the area in the last few years - are there many stinging nettles there? It's been years since I was there and it was fall then so I have no clue on this.

I'd say water levels close to normal, Hasn't been really wet here, but not dry by any means, I reckon I'm the closest member to the place. On the other side of allegheny, I'm not sure. As far as nettles, maybe in a few spots on the creek, but alot of that is laurel thickets so shouldn't be a problem. FYI, the washed out spots of trail suck, expect to bust your butt, or skin something at least once!

jnk, Thanks but per my other post we'll be heading up on the west side of Dolly Sods tomorrow. Oh, I have been to Laurel Fork before and loved it but it was many years ago. I think we're going to save it for fall or next spring. If we have some nice fall rains it should be great. As I've said, it's off most people's radar. I kinda like it that way. :-)
