I drove over the Shenandoah on 33 last week and noticed the lake in the distance. Couldn't do much rubbernecking due to the road.
Anything worth hiking down around it?

I looked at those sites. Not much other info out there. From the top of the mountain, it looks like a nice, secluded area. I guess I'll just have to drive back there and check it out next time I'm there.

I have more info on the area. At work now, not sure I have it here. If I don't I'll access it at home.

I have seen that lake a hundred times driving over that way, never went down in there. Tell you what Arf, if we get some promising info, maybe next trip over we'll drive over and hike it?

In or near is the Allegheny Mountain Trail North and the High Knob Trail. I believe we may be getting confused because there are two Skidmore Forks and I haven't separated out the trails completely.

Closest trail down in there that I can find is Union Springs, and that's back off the lake.

I need to track down maps of over there. I know reddish knob, which is pretty close I think to Skidmore Fork? and the area, but as far as the trails up there I don't

Well, jnk556 and I explored the area Saturday. Drove his truck around the lake and up Dunkle Hollow road to Slate Springs mtn, Flagpole Knob, Reddish Knob, ect. Quite a drive at about 2mph. The lake is nice and there are a lot of primitive camps along the road. Dunkle Hollow is barely a "road", so you could hike it without worrying about getting run over with traffic. You're not getting up there with a car. It's a Jeep trail for the most part. It doesn't seem to get much maintenance other than cutting of blow downs and I'm not sure who does it.

Well, I do know my truck is trail rated now!
Yeah, Dunkle hollow isn't happening in anything but a nice capable 4wd. But it is a fun drive, just take someone to spot in the bad places. It would be a decent hike as well, although I'm not sure how many miles it was up to Flagpole Knob...
