This past Tuesday, April 14th, my wife and I decided to hit the trail. And by my wife and I, I mean I decided and she tagged along . It was cold and dreary, lots of cloud cover and some drizzle. Kind of miserable but wonderful since we were heading out into the woods. We parked our car at the Appalachian Trail Parking on Route 23 around 1pm. and headed onto the blue blazed trail which joins the Iris (Red Dot) Trail about a hundred yards into the woods. We traveled south, passed Rutherford Lake, to the junction of the Iris/AT. We headed north on the AT and set up camp at the Rutherford Shelter. It took about four hours to hike the six miles, which I thought was pretty darn good considering it was our first time out in almost a year. It took a long time for us to wake up the next day and we didn't hit the trail until almost noon (Lazy Wednesday!) I had hiked this part of the AT before and my memory must have been fuzzy, because I did not recall all the ups and downs of this section haha. Needless to say, it took four hours of slow and steady hiking with plenty of breaks to complete the final three miles. My wife jumped for joy when she saw the car and promptly fell asleep for the ride home. All in all, it felt good to get back on the trail after so long off. Eagerly awaiting the next adventure. YoBear out!
