I meant to get this posted last week, but better late than never. We hiked up to Devil's Nose in Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area (WV) a couple of weeks ago. We started from Spruce Pine Hollow Roadside Park and followed the Tuscarora Trail. We got a late start because the friend that joined us had a commitment in the morning, so we had lunch at the shelter, which is only about a five minute walk from the parking lot. The privy there is something to behold. The folks who painted it had a sense of humor, for sure. There is about a mile of road walking near the beginning of the hike, but it wasn't too bad. Where the Tuscarora Trail leaves the road, it climbs really, really steeply up a number of switchbacks to the top of the ridge. The trail crew did a great job with the switchbacks. It isn't an easy climb, but it could have been a lot worse.
The view from Devil's Nose was nice. We continued on and Meadow Branch is very pretty. I would love to have spent some time exploring downstream. We could see various waterfalls from the trail above. We just didn't have time for bushwhacking that day. The bridge over Meadow Branch was the only place was any other people. Eventually, we reached our turnaround time and we re-traced our steps back to the car. It was actually a reasonably challenging hike (in a good way). I definitely need to explore that area more.
Spruce Pine Shelter. The two shelters I've seen in Sleepy Creek WMA are among the prettiest I've seen in the mid-Atlantic.

Trees in the late afternoon light.
The footbridge over Meadow Branch.
