A couple of weeks ago, we hiked Pass Mountain trail (right off of highway 211 in Shenandoah National Park) and the Appalachian Trail to Beahms Gap as a 10 mile out-and-back. We had intended to snowshoe, but they didn't get quite as much snow down there as we did at home. There was only about six inches on the ground, so we just used our microspikes. It turned out to be a really nice, warm day. By the time we were finished, the snow was pretty soupy. On our way up, we saw a line of bear tracks crossing the trail, which was pretty cool. We saw two other parties in five hours of hiking, one of which was a group of PATC maintainers. All in all, a very nice hike. We had lunch at Pass Mountain Hut. This tree is right by the hut. All of us thought the way the two trunks grew together was pretty interesting. Neighbor Mountain from the Appalachian Trail. Hogback Mountain, Mount Marshall, and the Peak from Beahms Gap. Skyline Drive at Beahms Gap. The drive was closed because there was still a decent amount of ice on it.
