Are there any good backwoods but fairly easy XC ski or snowshoe venues in Garrett County, MD or nearby? (the ideal would be to find something like Bear Swamp State Forest in Cayuga County, NY cnyhiking.com/BearSwampStateForest.htm in the event anyone is familiar)

You can try Potomac State Forest. I drive by it all the time, but have never stopped.

Knowing MD and their SP's, they either lock it up in winter, or charge you double just to get in.

There some decent x-country skiing available at Herrington Manor State Park and there's a cross-connector trail from there over to Swallow Falls State Park. If there's enough snow you could snowshoe also. I've been to both in the winter but it's been several years since I've been to Herrington manor but I recall that they had some nice areas.

FYI, New Germany SP is considered my many in the D.C., Baltimore corridor to be the premier X-country skiing venue in MD. They cater to the snow bunnies with groomed trails, lodges and warming shacks all geared toward winter activities.

Thanks for the pointers to New Germany and Herrington Manor. Both I see have Twitter feeds with ski conditions.
