HeatmapThis link made it around the web a few months ago. Posting it here as it can be useful for everyone here also. You can see the popularity of various trails, and can also discover ones you'd never know existed (even I've been able to find some of those). You can set to look at biking, running or both. I suggest not using "both", as that reduces the intensity of the trails. Also remember that this shows both trail and road use. There are some odd quirks, likely due to sampling, griding, or weighting of their data. It shows trails becoming much less popular near major road crossings and in trail towns, for example (and I'm sure that's just an artifact). There's also some misclassified data, usually under the biking category (though some of that is due to illicit trail use.) Thus, the Appalachian Trail does show up for light bike use, but then again, so does the Billy Goat Trail and Old Rag Mountain, and further away, inside the Grand Canyon, Angels Landing at Zion, and Yosemete's Half Dome. And I'm fairly certain nobody bikes those.

Very cool link. Thanks alot. Seems like the WV mnt trail runners have their skyland 40 mile route lit up nicely. If you look at the lower end of south prong and boars nest you'll notice the sections that cross red creed and go to the trailhead and not very visible. I belive this is due to the fact that the skyland 40 route does not cross red creek but instead connects boars nest and south prong via an unofficial linking that doesn't cross red creek. this shows up in the map rather well. thanks again

Interesting.
Lots of mountain bikers on Canaan Mountain compared to runners. I've never seen that many on the trails in there. Mostly on the loop road.
Anyway, I wonder why they don't add another layer for hiking/backpacking.

arf I believe they have a big mountain bike race on Canaan every year I think its called the Rattlesnake 50 or something like that. I believe thats why your seeing the intensity of those trails so high. Kind of the same deal with the trailrunners I mentioned above. If you have a group of people running/biking an event and they all are using the strava system to track themselves your going to see a peak in the activity on those trails.

I don't follow the MB racers as I have yet to run into that on the trails. I do check the trail runners though.

There's not much of Mid State Trail showing up on there, other than around State College, and the Eastern States 100 course. There is a little bit in the southern part of SGL 37, maybe someone at Mansfield is a device enthusiast.

Interesting but doesn't really add anything I didn't already know. Strava isn't used by everyone and in fact if this were combined with Map my Walk or Map my Hike/Bike, etc. you would get better info. I run a stand alone GPS datalogger and don't upload my data to the web. I do like to keep some of my spots somewhat secret. Mt. biking is popular on Canaan Mt which is why it was not in the most recent Wilderness proposal. Biking used to be popular at DSN and even though the Wilderness committee had decided not to pursue designation someone at a legislative level added it at the last minute and I'm very glad they did. As for trail runners I don't think I've ever seen one.

I always find the Strava heat map fascinating (I'm a bit of a map geek). As a bonus, I discovered a potential new road bike route (old WV highway 55) by looking around at where people ride in WV.
