Goodwill stores around here are worthless for gear. I've looked several times and nothing, nada, not even a wool shirt. I suspect around larger population centers one will have better success. We don't even have decent outdoor stores anymore. Morgantown used to have 2 decent outdoor stores. One closed shop a few years ago and the other one has primarily moved to bikes, boats and skis. The backpacking section of it is 15 by 20 feet or so and has virtually nothing. Guess they're concentrating on the high priced other items and backpacking is now an afterthought. If I want a decent store I'll drive to REI in Pittsburgh though most often I order online. I do like to try on certain things though like boots so an occasional road trip is necessary.

Have never seen any good backpacks, tents or other gear.. but have run across a few good deals at the local Goodwill on Shirts, Shorts & Pants. My best deal was a pair of Mountain Hardwear Shorts for $5.
