Took a quick one night backpack trip up to Canaan Mnt. The morning started off in the low 20's. I chose the eastern pointy knob trailhead and found the going much easier in subfreezing weather becuse I didn't have to deal with any of the boggy mucky areas they were all frozen solid
The rhododendrons were all showing signs of the cold which gave all the thickets a sad droopy look to them
The cliffs along Red Run were decked out in ice. Also came across a birch tree that was oozing sap that froze.
The last crossing of Red Run before joining FR13 was a bit hairy do to all the ice but I picked the safest route and took my time and made it across fine. I then hiked back along FR13 and did some exploring along the newly designated section of the Allegheny trail. It used to be Fire trail 6? or something along those lines but it appears they've rerouted the AT along that trail back to Plantation Trail where it resumes its normal course north to Blackwater Falls. The AT used to come out along FR13 further east but this new routing makes the road walk along FR13 shorter. Theres a new sign at the junction with Forest road and brand new shiny blazes, someone also did some work with a chainsaw and rerouted the trail around some boggy sections. I found this neat little campsite not far off the AT
I found a suitable spot to camp and called it a day it had warmed to the upper 20's by the time I went to sleep. It continued to warm overnight and I awoke to a freezing rain which had coated everything in a layer of ice. It made hiking over rocky terrain a bit treacherous so I decided to hike directly back to the truck and come on home.
It was a good outing I stayed warm and dry and made it out in one piece.
