Tom Thwaites has passed away.
Thwaites was a PA hiking icon, the father of PA's longest trail, the Mid State Trail, and author of "50 Hikes in PA" series. He was a long time supporter and advocate for hiking in PA. He will be missed.
From the Keystone Trails Association:
With a heavy heart, we grieve the loss of a trail legend, Tom Thwaites, who passed away on December 25. Tom was a physics professor at Penn State, author of a series of hiking books, including "50 Hikes in Central PA," and - perhaps most famously - he was the architect of the Mid-State Trail, the longest hiking trail in Pennsylvania. Condolence cards may be sent to his wife, Barbara, at H119 Foxdale Village, 500 E. Marilyn Ave., State College, PA 16801.
“Why do large numbers of hikers venture into the wet, wild woods with biting insects and stinging nettles, on trails lined with roots and studded with rocks? There is something different and deeply appealing about hiking in the out-of-doors. The wilder and more beautiful the land, the better the hiking. Clearly, these experiences are spiritual. It is the deep, but bright, secret of hiking. Spiritual experience is essential to our well-being, so hiking remains popular.” — Tom Thwaites

One of 4 hikes scheduled in 2015 in memory of Tom Thwaites (1931-2014), Father of Mid State Trail, Keystone Trails Association Trail Care and Trail Crew, and author of all three "50 Hikes in Pennsylvania" guidebooks is this weekend. Participants are invited briefly to share a memory of Dr. Thwaites during the hike. The Tioga Region hike has been scheduled through Asaph Trail Club. The public is invited. Contact hike leader with questions about the sometimes rough trail. Rain or shine. The group meets in town at Wellsboro Dunkin Donuts (in strip mall across from post office on Main St) at 9:30 am, then car caravans to the trailhead on a graded gravel road to begin the hike (alternate time: 10 am, where Mid State Trail crosses Rattler Rd near Morris). Map of area: Section 17 on www.hike-mst.org/index.php/the-trail/section-updates Circuit hike with shorter (7 km) and longer (14 km) options. History, views from the "Haunted Vista" over the Wilson Creek valley. The longer version passes through an additional pretty hollow, then 110 year old curious ruins of an inclined plane. Hike leader has researched history to separate true from apocryphal but fun stories about the area. 2/3 on trail, 1/3 on narrow dirt roads. Several short climbs, several rocky stretches (including stepping over several rock crevices), unbridged small and sometimes multi-colored streams.
