For me, it's somewhere I've never been before, followed by solitude. Great views are a plus, but usually tend to clash with the solitude thing. A great trip for me is when I can go for a few days and never see another human. I'm allergic to crowds.

Pretty much the same here. I can get to the great vistas with good timing though and avoid the crowds.

That can't be all, else PA's www.hike-mst.org would be more popular than PA's stretch of the A.T. It remains true on the MST that if you hike alone, you will meet more bears than people.

I am partial to timing my camp site where I can have my cup of coffee and bagel while watching the sun rise over a view of endless mountains. Usually its far enough from the parking lot that only the hardy will make the trip.

More likely (for me) is that you'll see the same number of bears and people, namely none. And I've seen other people on the MST, but no bears (there) yet.

For me, I think it's always been great campsites in addition to a new trail. And by great, that means solitude, views...and hidden.

For you folks that actually want to see bears in Pa. I suggest heading to the ANF. I saw more bears there in one trip than I see over a number of years backpacking W.Va.

Solitude first. I like trails that are themselves pretty hikes with constantly changing scenery or terrain. A campsite with a view is a definite plus. That is why I like Laurel River Trail in Laurel Fork Wilderness, WV. Have only seen 1 person (on a weekend at that) and he was within 1/4 mile of the campground. The scenery has a very nice flow and there are some pretty campsites along the Laurel River. And as an added bonus: very, very easy hiking.

I hiked that section from the campground down to MMR at Beaverdam Run. We carried packs for an over nighter, but the walking is so easy we ended up out at the vehicle well before dark. Went and retrieved the other vehicle and camped the night back at Beaverdam under the trees in that nice meadow. Having access to a cooler with cold beverages made up for not camping on the trail that night.
