The long-awaited GWNF management plan, released on Nov. 18, recommends a 90,000-acre tract of forest land on Shenandoah Mountain for permanent protection as a National Scenic Area with two embedded Wilderness areas: Little River and an expanded Ramseys Draft. By including this recommendation for protection in the final forest management plan, the GWNF has responded to all the citizens, organizations, and businesses in the Shenandoah Valley and across Virginia who want to see this special area protected. Indeed. Truly, I find the Forest Service to be a baffling organization...but from to time they hit one out of the park.

Not hiked any of that area, so i don't know exactly what is what, but sounds ok to me. Anyone got a map of this area?? I know where Ramsey's draft is, not sure about the other.

Expanded Ramseys Draft... by 20 acres and clearly allowing bikes along its western boundary trail (which is part of Great Eastern Trail)

From the looks of the map, it would be a decent idea. It's a not a area I have ever frequented, but I may in the future.

Sorry, I didn't have a link to the map before. Here is a link to the Final GWNF map as proposed by the Forest Service. Expanded Ramseys Draft... by 20 acres and clearly allowing bikes along its western boundary trail (which is part of Great Eastern Trail) ki0eh, If you check the map you will see that the Ramsey's Draft expansion is significant to the north and east. Not sure of the acreage but it appears to nearly double the size of the Wilderness area. As for allowing bikes on the Shenandoah Mountain Trail, that has been part of the plan all along to get bikers to buy into the increased protection in the area. The trail is a major one and for my part I don't mind it being open to bikes since it wasn't really that wilderness-like to begin with. Read the entire plan of the Friends of Shenandoah Mt - it includes several wilderness areas along with a National Scenic Area. I still think this is great news.

Maybe we can look it over in the spring. I know Reddish knob is in this area, and I know how to get you up there, as for trails though, not many that I know of. Then again I've only bee across there once, and never really looked either. The trail from 250 up to 33 would be a good hike, but no water, and one hell of a logistics problem placing vehicles.
