Pennsylvania State Game Lands 57 (Becker Brook)
Sunday morning I headed up to Pennsylvania’s State Game Land 57. To take a exploratory hike to two drainage west of the Becker Brook drainage, and the north side of the Mehoopany Creek. On my drive up Windy Valley Road. I noticed that drainages such as White Brook were completely dry. So I decided to change my plans a bit as I figured the two drainages would most probably also be dry.
Followed windy valley road for approximately 7.5 miles from it's intersection with PA route 87, to a state game land parking area at the top of the plateau after the steep drive up from the Mehoopany Creek drainage. The parking lot is located right at the corner of SGL 57. On the northeast side of the Becker Brook drainage.
Decided I would just do a loop. Bushwhacking along SGL lands boundary. Crossing a Northeasterly spur of Becker Brook and then the main part of Becker Brook. Before climbing up to the southwesterly rim of the brooks drainage.
I followed the southwesterly rim of the drainage. Following a line of cliffs with the typical SGL 57 rock overhangs that seem to be prevalent in the general area. Decided to find a way down through the cliffs and explore their undersides before heading through the large rocks in the woods, steeply downhill to the Mehoopany creek. Followed the Mehoopany downstream to Becker Brook. And then, loosely followed Becker Brook, and then it’s northeasterly spur back upstream to the SGL boundary I hiked along in the way in.
SGL 57 has to be one of my favorite places to explore. Only wish it was a bit closer to my home. I will definitely have to come back to explore the two drainages I wanted to head to originally. Hopefully in the spring when the creeks are running higher. As I’m sure they will both have waterfall's of some type.
