I kind of collect water filters, always trying something new. I have an old Sweetwater, MRS miniworks, Katydyn pocket and a Hyperflow. Right now, I carry the hyperflow. It's fairly small and light. While it's fairly fast, I don't think it quite lives up to it's claims for throughput. The pocket filter rides under the back seat of my truck as a just in case sort of thing. Way too heavy to carry. The others I keep around to loan out to new backpackers that might not have a filter of their own yet. After carrying Nalgene bottles, hydration bladders, dealing with leaky bite valves and leaks inside the pack, I've pretty much gone low tech when it comes to carrying water. I stick a few bottles of grocery store water in my pack and call it good. The hyperflow fits inside the necks perfectly. An empty 2L platypus bladder rides in the pack for filling at camp.

Only had two filters both are Katydyn hiker pros. I looked at the sweetwater but went with the Katydyn mainly because I had just purchased a new filter for my original katydyn which suffered from a cracked housing when I droped it on some rocks on a cold day. Before the filters I used the potable aqua tabs which were nice cause they were light and small but I didn't like waiting for a half an hour before drinking. I was hiking with someone who was using the ultraviolet pen which seemed nice and small but like being able to get water from small springs and other areas where it would be hard to fill up a bottle to use the pen on The filters make this nice and I can get water from about any source regardless of how deep it is. Plus alot of the water around where I hike has a tinge to it from the tannic acid and I've read where the pens work best in clear water. As far as what a carry water in I have a couple nalgenes and a large platypus bladder for filling up at the last stop before camp (if camp is dry)

Sawyer Mini. I like that it is small and light, but you need to have something to scoop water with to pour in the bag as it is hard to fill out of a stream. That and 2-3 of the 20 oz. Gatorade/Vitamin Water bottles work for me.

Over the past 10 years I've only had 3 filters. The first was a Katadyn Hiker. I replaced it with the Hiker Pro. It attaches to bladders via a coupling so you can pump right into the bladder w/o risk of spillage. You do have to "burp" the bladder if you are filling it to max capacity.I broke the handle on the first Pro by trying to push water through a clogged filter. The cartridges are kind of expensive but I usually get a season out of one unless I'm pumping out of a muddy source. That's the only maintenance except for adding some silicon lubricant to the pump shaft. I use a 3 liter Nalgene bladder. Only leakage I ever encountered was from a puncture when I had improperly packed the pack and then leaned against it when taking a break. I don't know about other bladders but the Nalgene bite valve has a locked position - sort of an on off valve - that prevents accidental leakage from the tube.
I remember some folks claiming that the disposal Katadyn filter cartridges can be rejuvenated by soaking in hot/boiling water. While this will allow you to pump water it will no longer trap all the microscopic nasties it was originally designed to extract. Don't be cheap and get yourself sick. Buy a new cartridge.

Gravity filter for me. Switched over back in 2000 I believe and haven't looked back. Still using an SWA inline filter but have a Sawyer to try.

I use a PUR (Katadyn) Hiker for filtering water. If the water is from a nice mountain source, I will use my Steripen. 3+ years with no failure, besides battery replacement. I also always carry tablets for the 'last ditch'.
As for storage, I use a Nalgene 32oz. that I keep my duct tape, waterproof med tape, and Leukotape on, along with a 100oz. Platypus BigZip. I bought it after my pal's lasted two years, and mine is going into it's third season, unscathed.

I've only ever used a Steripen. I've had it for six years - no problems. It's great not having to pump, no aftertaste, and ready for immediate consumption. It kills viruses and bacteria and protozoa, and from what I've read about filters is that sometimes they don't take care of viruses (if there even is any in flowing streams is another topic of debate). If you don't want the sediments in your nalgene, I pop a coffee filter over the mouth when I dip it in the stream.

My old stand-by: MSR Mini-works. A lil bulky & heavy & slow, but never had a problem with it in the field Attachments:
