1st, what packs are you using and happy with?
I've had a MountainSmith for my Lab(s), but I really hate just about everything about it. The fit is awful on broad chested Labs.
2nd, Since most of my time is spent in W.Va.,,,, have you had your dog given the rattlesnake vaccine? My vet up here in Ohio seems to think it's well worth it, but he told me to find a local vet in W.Va. to have it done because he has to buy it in six dose lots and there is no call for it in the area. Leaving him stuck with the other doses.
Going price in podunk W.Va for it and is it common for vets in the area to handle the stuff?

I have an REI pack for my dog. I like it. I haven't found boots that will stay on her though. That's what she really needs too with all the rocky trails they put a hurting on her pads. She always loses one or two every trip. Can't help you with the rattlesnake advice. I've been extremely lucky the only times I've seen rattlesnakes she wasn't with me. With all the hound men around Petersburg and Davis a vet in that area might be your best bet. Might want to post something on a hunting forum those guys know how to deal with dogs in the backcountry.

Nearest REI is in Pittsburgh and I doubt if they'd be happy if I brought him into the store to try on a pack. There just isn't any place local to me that carries them and the big chain pet stores just give you a dumb look when you ask about them. Can't help with the boots, sorry.

I use the ruff wear approach pack. Definitely measure your pup's girth before ordering. My dog weight wise is a medium dog, but she is slender and uses a size small pack. We have been using this pack for 8 years and it is still in good shape. I wash it a few times each season to get out the sour muddy odors. I also use the Kurgo wander pack for Ultralite overnighters, as it is small. It is a decent pack, but I have concerns about durability. Have only seen 3 rattlesnakes while hiking and all of them were lying in the road. My dog is totally blind to snakes, which is worrisome, but my experience with most timber rattlers is that they have not been aggressive, but that could change if they are shedding or get stepped on.

I can just see you putting boots on Jack arf, he already walks in circles chasing his pack!
