My husband and I volunteer on Old Rag. I've lost count of the number of times I have hiked it at this point (everything you've heard about the crowding and impacts to the mountain, especially in the fall...all true). We volunteered last Sunday, which was cool, damp, and gray. It was still crowded, but not too bad by fall standards and, given the weather, people didn't linger. I had a nice day on the mountain and cloudy days often make for good pictures. Banded Tussock Moth Caterpillar (Halysidota tessallaris) along the Weakley Hollow Fire Road. Looking down the rock scramble from the summit. On the way down the Saddle Trail, there is a spot where there is a clear view of the summit. I walked right by it for years without seeing it. Most people do because they are looking down, focused on the rough, rocky trail at their feet. Last year, we paused to rest for a minute and I happened to look up. Now I try to point it out to anyone I'm hiking with. There are a few more photos on my blog.

Thanks! It was a good day up there, especially for this time of year. Bright and sunny days in October can be overwhelmingly crowded.

The second pic above actually shows the West Summit, not the main summit. But this one is nicer because it's not overrun with people! It's closed to hiking though, to preserve the flora that's been, of course, virtually trampled out of existence on the main summit.
I've spent a large number of days over the past 12 years rock climbing on Old Rag, wandering about the mountain to the various crags. I almost always hike up from Berry Hollow so enjoy the sight in the pic every time...and it's never crowded once you step off the Saddle/Ridge Trails!

Virginiapine: You are right, it is the west summit. I should have been more specific.
I go back and forth on the crowding on Old Rag. On one hand, the place is definitely loved to death. On the other, the fact that everyone goes there means there's a whole national park (not to mention other nearby places) where solitude can be found since everyone is hiking Old Rag and a half dozen other trails. It is what it is and I don't expect that to change anytime soon.
