We are thinking of doing Mike's Wilderness hike, anyone done it? Anyone have ideas on a more isolated backpacking trip up there? We have been doing Roaring Plains lately, but want to hike the Sods.

There's nothing isolated in Dolly Sods. The worst spots for crowds is at the two crossings of Red Creek: at the base of the climb up to the junction with the Rocky Point Trail, and then at the Forks. Note that there are good reasons for these crowds; both spots are extremely scenic.
Personally, I wouldn't worry about the crowds. Pick whatever route option you like and just have fun.

The key with Dolly Sods is avoiding weekends and holidays, Friday's as well. Go mid week and you'll have a good chance of having a lot of alone time.

Mid-week in off peak seasons, or the dead of winter! Sad, but Dolly Sods is not what it used to be.

Great, thanks. Since we are planning a Friday-Sunday trip, maybe we should consider other options.

Great, thanks. Since we are planning a Friday-Sunday trip, maybe we should consider other options. Cranberry is generally better if you want solitude. Just doesn't have the great views of the Sods once you get off 150 though.

Quehanna Wild Area is another good choice, isolated, never crowded, big meadows like Dolly Sods, some views, great camping and beautiful streams.
