My friend and I want to get away from it all. We've both done parts of the AT in Shenandoah and there were too many people, to many cars. We're happy to drive up to four hours from DC (ignoring traffic). What is your personal favorite trip? Something in the Poconos? Or out in West Virginia?

Check out the Susquehannock Trail, Quehanna Wild Area, Old Loggers Path, Loyalsock Trail, Chuck Keiper Trail, Black Forest Trail, or Mid State Trail in the Pine Creek region. All in PA. The Susquehannock and Quehanna are the most isolated.

Mid State Trail south of State College, PA is more within a 4 hour window from DC. You still won't see much of anyone on the trail (maybe spring turkey hunters if you go this month).
A bi-state trip in PA and MD would use MST Section 1 (PA Route 326 in Rainsburg Gap) south to Green Ridge State Forest Great Eastern Trail to Paw Paw Tunnel on the Potomac. There is a 4 mile unblazed road walk in between, but (except Sunday) you can carb up at a Mennonite store in Flintstone MD (north side of I-68) on the way. Washington DC to Flintstone MD is 2 hr 5 min on Mapquest. This area crosses over MST's highest point but is not as brutally rocky as other MST sections, or the Tuscarora in PA.

I guess some of my suggestions were too far. Check out Allegheny Front Trail. Loyalsock is beautiful and close to 4 hrs away, maybe a little more, same with Quehanna Wild Area. Also consider Cranberry and Otter Creek Wilderness areas in WV.

I'm assuming you are looking for a loop hike? Trout Run Valley Circumnavigation is an option - a few good viewpoints and not much in the way of other hikers. Probably only a 2 hour drive from DC (just south of Wardensville, WV). If you could arrange a shuttle, North Fork Mountain trail is my personal favorite and rarely crowded. It has one marginal water source however, so be prepared to cache some water near the halfway point, which intersects a Forest Service road.

Parts of Trout Run can get pretty busy on weekends, you would have to go during the week. Half Moon and Big Schloss are big draws. NFM is a winner. Should be plenty of water at the spring this year.

I hiked Big Schloss on a Monday last October and only saw a few people - not bad at all. Tibbet's Knob across the road from the parking lot was even less crowded and may have a better view - at least as good. North Fork Mt. in WV has great views but is basically dry and will require a shuttle.
