Mocanaqua Preserve Hike Sunday April 23, 2017 After looking at some trip reports done by Jeff Mitchell. I decided it was time to visit the Mocanaqua Preserve in Mocanaqua Pennsylvania Ended up doing the Green Loop. Interesting way to start the hike by walking through the local wastewater treatment plant. Some areas of the green blazed loop were confusing and the trail can be easily lost. If ones not careful. Especially the area prior to point 4 on the preserves trail map. Trial comes down through an open grass meadow, and intersects with a wide gravel road, with no indication which way to go. Luckily for me I’ve been hiking long enough that I sort of have a built in sense which way to go. Along with what the trail map showed. Took in the views from the viewpoints labeled E, D and C on the trail maps. Viewpoint B was a bit sketchy if one tried to get an open view without trees. As loose dirt/shale led right to the top a considerable cliff. One can definitely tell this place was striped mined for coal years ago. Lots of interesting rock formations in some areas. Preserve map says the Green Loop is 8 miles. But my GPS said 9.25 miles. A few pictures from the hike.
