I thought there was a trip report from AegisIII about a Metro-based hike on Potomac Heritage Trail inside the DC/NoVA beltway area, but I can't find it. Possibly it was on the old site. Wondering if that can be recovered.

Cannot find it either. My album is possibly at Google Photos, but I don't like it any more compared to their Picassa. My loop was a C&O Canal/PHT loop starting at the Foggy Bottom metro (orange/blue) and ending at Rosslyn (also orange/blue). I don't really have any plans for returning in the near future, but I've been thinking of starting from Tenleytown (red) and taking some of the valley trails in the local parks to get to Fletcher's Cove and thus skipping most of the towpath. I do recommend it.

So the outer end of your loop was Chain Bridge then?
About two years ago I did a metro hike from the Rock Creek Park nature center, to Rapids Bridge going down through the eastern side of the park and cutting over on the Normanstone trail to Whitehaven down Glover-Archbold to the C&O towpath and over to Foggy Bottom to ride up to Friendship Heights and the bus over Military Rd back.
Last weekend I started from the nature center again, down Western Ridge trail to Melvin Hazen trail to Metro at Cleveland Park. My intent was to go to Crystal City but announcements about problems with both blue and yellow lines sent me to Smithsonian again, dodging cherry peepers and across the George Mason bridge, up Mount Vernon trail to Arlington Cemetery then around the fence to Netherlands Carillon and Iwo Jima memorial, through Rosslyn to MtV trail the other way a bit, (passing one or possibly two PHT markers after the land bridge from Rosslyn, to stay on topic) over to Theodore Roosevelt Island a spell, then back to VA side briefly to follow TR bridge and New Hampshire Ave to Dupont Circle metro, out to Tenleytown to roadwalk Nebraska to the #pizzagate place, back some side streets in upper Broad Branch watershed to return to the park.
