Is it worth hiking? Looking for a hike close to my place there and just wondered if it was worth it. Did the Northern half before.

I'd say most definitely yes. It's not as nice as the northern end, because the ridge is a broader and gentler, but there are some nice viewpoints. e.g.

It's going to be an old guy hike, so gentle is good. There's supposed to be a side hike that looks over the top of Seneca Rocks on that end. Around mile 8.4 or something.

The southern half can be kind of rocky but that's sort of a given on NFM. There's one spot where the trail abruptly comes out to a drop off with a great view. There's also a good view from the hang glider ramp. Years ago there were feral goats in that area and I was fortunate enough to see and photograph them. I'm not sure if they're still there.

Absolutely worth hiking! Nice views and pretty easy walking for the most part. I recommend it.

Would be a good hike I'd say, only crappy part is parking on the Rt.33 end, or lack there of, plus I think some of the trail runs through private land on that end?

Trail does run through some private land but that's not an issue. Parking is a pain but doable.

Yeah, parking on 33 is a little iffy, but it's going to be a weekday hike. So it shouldn't be an issue.

Can you hike it all in a day?

^ Yes, although it's 24mi or so. I've wanted to do it for years but arranging the car shuttle ($80...?) has been my stumbling block.

Well, for what it's worth, I've been up to the Seneca Rocks overlook and back as a dayhike (~14mi).

Although it might confuse only me, Fourth Mountain is the name of the ridge on PA Mid State Trail between Little Flat (the old fire tower and venue of the Tom Thwaites Monument) passing Indian Wells overlook and others to Big Flat (highest point in Huntingdon County). Also a reminder of the joke about the ship that ran aground near Edinburgh, Scotland, after being told to anchor below the Forth Bridge and looking for the fourth bridge.

ki0eh , for a few minutes there I had no idea what you were talking about. Then I reread the title of the thread and saw the typo, which I had completely missed seeing earlier(!), and got it.

I'm with everyone else. The south half is pretty spectacular. We did it the whole trail last May and really enjoyed it.

OK, I fixed the typo. As for someone wanting an end to end shuttle up there, I can see why they want $80. It's a long drive around there and I'd have to make the whole loop around from Upper Tract, Petersburg, over the mountain, Franklin and back to Upper Tract. I could do it on mostly back roads, shorter miles, but it would still take a long time. But, if anyone plans on hiking it this year and is going to camp at the 1/2 way point on FR79. LMK and I'll drive you up some water if you need it. (If I'm there). I split my time between the cabin there and the house in Ohio. Heading back to do some fishing soon.
