Sugarloaf Mountain Loop Sunday January 17, 2016 Started from the DEC trailhead parking area on Dale Lane (No winter maintenance for last .25 miles). The road into and the parking area where snow covered and Icy but I made it easily with four wheel drive. Did the 6.7 mile loop hike counterclockwise from the parking area. Using the Mink Hollow Trail, Devil’s Path up and over Sugarloaf. And back out the Roaring Kill Trail Definitely need some type of traction device. (i.e. Micro Spikes, Crampons or Snowshoes) Especially on the cliffy area soon after the ascent of the west side of Sugarloaf. Very interesting ascent. Probably six to eight inches or so of snow above 3500 foot elevation. With lots of hard packed icy trail down lower. Took my care descending the east side of the peak. Didn’t want to take any falls being alone on the mountain. A few tricky spots on the east side. Seems the Beaver Pond is dry once again. Was great being back in the Catskill’s on a winter day.
