endlessmountains.wordpress.com/2023/10/17/backpacking-the-susquehannock-trail-system-sts/I recently thruhiked the 84 mile STS, the longest loop in the east. I really enjoyed the beautiful forests, creeks, and isolation. The trail has some superb campsites and one of the finest system of shelters I've seen on a trail. The fall colors were beautiful, and I also enjoyed the occasional meadows, beaver dams, and ponds. I liked hiking right through Cross Fork where I got a burger and beer, right on trail. This trail also has an assortment of log and suspension footbridges that were fun to cross. On my last night, I heard elk bugling. If you're looking for an isolated, uncrowded, and beautiful loop trail, check out the STS.

I really enjoyed reading your writeup. It certainly makes me miss Pennsylvania, and the hiking opportunities it provides this time of year.
Also, I love the STS. It's really a tremendous effort by the trail club to keep it maintained, and all the new shelters make it possible to hike without a tent. I believe they have even more shelters planned.

Hope you're somewhere with good trails and good trout streams!

I'm in Chicago now...so not necessarily, but the reasoning was good (I got married and my wife's job is inflexible and immobile for the moment). So for the time being, Wisconsin and Michigan are our respites from the city. We've been going every couple weeks to do some hiking on the Ice Age Trail, several Wisconsin State Parks, and hope to get some time in on the North Country Trail in Michigan soon too.
