Hi folks,
I wanted to ask if anyone has ever hiked on the Little Allegheny Mountain trail (FS #843) down in the southern Monongahela NF in Greenbrier Cty?
My son and I attempted to find it from its northern terminus along WV CO 14, west of Neola. There is a trailhead (room for about 3 cars) and a sign with the correct trail number. I noted on my copy of the Mon NF big map an old FS road splitting off from 843 very close to the TH, and this is indeed what we found after a couple hundred feet - a nice grassy roadway headed right (W/NW), and an overgrown track heading S.
There is an old cement-block storage building within a few feet of the start of this overgrown track, and then another similar building one hundred yards further along, in a clearing. The clearing is getting filled with foot-tall oak saplings. We could not find a trail leading out of the clearing...
We backtracked and hiked for a mile on the grassy roadbed, confirming that it heads NW, away from Little Allegheny Mtn.
This trail is described in my 7th ed. Mon NF Hiking Guide (deHart/Sundquist).
We did "salvage" the day by heading a mile further along CO 14 to where the Allegheny Trail crosses and hiked north up Meadow Creek Mtn - lovely hike, though there is some blown-down along the trail. Nothing anyone who likes this very under-utilized trail (& I hope it remains this way!) would have any problems with...
Cheers from Charlottesville, VA

Virginiapine,
Welcome to the forum and I have to say that area is one of the only in the state I don't have any familiarity with. I do recall that some of the trails on one of the southern ranger districts were being formally abandoned due to lack of use. I check my sources when I get home and see.

That would be much appreciated. I'll have to go look for it again someday, perhaps from the southern terminus...

Little Allegheny Mt. Tr. last shows up in the 2001 edition of the Mon NF Hiking Guide. I believe it has been formally abandoned. I have hiked several abandoned trails some from much longer ago than that. Plot out the trail in Caltopo and load a GPS track and you may be able to find it.
