Hudson Highlands State Park – Bull Hill Hike
Sunday December 24
This past Sunday I went back up to the Hudson Highlands State Park. Located just north of town of Cold Springs New York and on the east side of the Hudson River. My object of the day was a loop hike up and over Bull Hill (aka Mount Taurus)
The hike consisted of a six mile loop using the Washburn trail, Notch trail, Brook trail and the Cornish trail to close out the loop. Bull Hill has the distinction of having the greatest elevation gain (1,425 feet) of any of the Hudson Highland Peak trails to its summit. As the Cornish trail basically starts off at sea level adjacent to the Hudson River.
Some really interesting ruins of the Cornish Estate to explore along the Brook and Cornish trails. Along with some very nice viewpoints along the Washburn trail made for a very pleasant hike, on a somewhat sunny but cold December day.
Once I got back down to the Washburn trailhead parking area. I crossed over route 9D to the Little Stony Point Park. Which has a .75 loop trail that follows along the shoreline of the Hudson River with some great view of Storm King Mountain, and Breakneck Ridge to the north. Along with an old Iron Mine Tunnel, on the south side of the loop trail.
A few pictures form the day:
I decided on the full loop
A view of Cold Spring NY from 600 feet above the Hudson River
Views south down the Hudson on Bull Hill
Storm King Mountain from Bull Hill
Another southerly view from higher up Bull Hill
Rocky Washburn trail almost to the top of Bull Hill
Breakneck Ridge from summit of Bull Hill
Breakneck Brook Cascade along Brook trail
Storm King Mountain across the Hudson River from Little Stony Point Park
Breakneck Ridge and Bull Hill from Little Stony Point Park
Iron Mine Audit in Little Stony Point Park
