Looking at hiking the 2nd section (blackwater falls to cass) sometime in May. I have the trail guide. Was wondering if anyone has hiked this section?

I've hiked bits between the otter creek Wilderness to Glady mostly on an old railroad grade that follows the creek bearing the same name. Flat, easy and very scenic. Some nice fishing and swimming holes as well. The the rail-trail section as far as the High Falls trail junction. Also easy but exposed to the sun. very pastoral with farms and pastures in a valley.

Roughest section by far between Blackwater and Cass would be from the high falls trail up and across Shavers mountain, and back down and over to Cass.

Roughest section by far between Blackwater and Cass would be from the high falls trail up and across Shavers mountain, and back down and over to Cass. Of the stretch you mention is the section from high falls trail to Durbin or the section from Durbin to Cass rougher. Both seem to gain the ridge and stay up there but have a fair amount of ups and downs.

I have never hiked any of it from Durbin to Cass, and honestly, i don't even know the route it takes. The section over Shavers I know is pretty rough on the Gaudineer side, and the High falls side isn't too horrible, but I guess if your hiking the Allegheny trail, your looking for a tougher hike. I need to get up there and hike it since it has been cleared.

It's a tossup on which section is tougher. The High Falls to Durbin section is more remote and not as well maintained as the Durbin-Cass section, has a 1/4 mile section of thorns and a fairly rocky, steep descent from Shavers Mt., but the section from Durbin to Cass, while the tread is fairly good the entire way, is a roller coaster of ups and downs in some stretches. Really depends on what you call "tough". Neither is an easy stroll, that's for sure.
I guess if you pinned me down, I'd say the High Falls to Durbin section is the tougher of the two.

Speaking of Durbin to Cass, where is the trail head end of it in Durbin?? I've often thought about exploring that section, but honestly I have no idea where it goes!

According to the "Hiking Guide to the Allegheny Trail" at the junction of US250 and the River Road (PCP 250/2) the Allegheny Trail leaves US250 and follows the River Road. After crossing the East Fork of the Greenbrier River the trail turns sharply back to the left. Follow this roadway for approximately 100 yards and turn right up a steep hill.

What vdeal says is correct re:River Road, but contrary to the guide the trail actually goes to the right after crossing the river, but just for a very short distance, maybe 50 yards, then cuts up the hill to the left. Very easy to find.

I'm sure it has a trailhead, I'll have to look.
