Wish i could have got a pic of the bald eagle we seen on Laurel Fork in VA this weekend. First one I have ever seen close up in the wild.

^ That's a nice shot; contrasts make for good photos. Due to computer issues I'm having a bit of trouble posting my Dolly Sods/Canaan Valley photo-trip. It may take me a couple more days. Until then, here's one more photo from Dolly Sods to tide you over:

jnk,
Thanks for the update - checked the critique. Trails sound like they're in good shape.

jnk, Thanks for the update - checked the critique. Trails sound like they're in good shape. For the most part yes. Bearwallow at the two ends is nice, in between, it is pretty rough, and not well marked. Laurel Fork is nicely marked, and except for the 2 blowouts a pretty nice walk.

That was yesterday. Took Flatrock Run Trail to Haystack Saturday morning. Flatrock was tough! Great waterfalls though. The railroad grade wasn't too bad, pretty mucky in spots. I could not find a trail up to the meadow near the knob though, just climbed that hill up. Its funny you guys were talking about it on the other thread, the google earth files were a help.

Looks like you're 2 up on me. I never considered Flatrock at any point in my hiking "career" - too tough for me. I was considering doing a BP next year. Where we would hike to Haystack from the pipeline, probably base camping. This is dependant on if I can get my stamina back.
Did you do it solo?

Yes, solo. Sam was thinking of coming but figured 4 weekends away from home in a row was enough! I am all for the all for the basecamp idea, I would have liked to explore the knob more but between my legs being tired and the rest of me tired of fighting the undergrowth I opted for a nice sit down and cup of tea.

MR, Ah come on, Flatrock would be fun. 2200 feet of elevation gain isn't that bad. Did it twice many years ago. The problem is in making a loop. Requires lots of road walking. Always went up it, never down.

Ha, no way I wanted to do that much road walking to end the hike. I did it as an out and back, going down really makes you appreciate what you did the day before! Plus I got to see the Run coming down the hill again...

Great picture of the sunrise. Now I want to get out to Haystack Knob! But this weekend's forecast doesn't look very backpacker-friendly.

Let me get this right. Are you guys talking about the Flatrock Plains Trail that goes up to Roaring/Flatrock Plains, in West Virginia? I've been up (and down) that one but have never been to Haystack Knob; looks nice!
