www.jtphillips.com/DollySodsMaps/wholeSods.htmlThis link has an unofficial side trail listed as the Cabin Mountain Trail. I can tell this map is outdated, but I assume that this trail once existed as part of the Whitegrass ski trails? Or maybe it still is but it was also heavily hiked back then? Just curious. I visited the Dunkenbarger/Little Stone Coal intersection and couldn't find anything. I'm only curious because I'm always interested in exploring a new part of the sods.

aseege,
Yes, the Cabin Mt. Trail still exists. In actuality it's more of a road than a trail. You can connect right to it off of FS80, from the Whitegrass ski trails or National Nordic trails. It also is supposed to go clear down to Laneville Rd but I've not been down there. It's an easy walk but the old upper end of Little Stonecoal trail wasn't visible when I was on it. Now, to be certain not all of it is on public land but non of it is posted. The trails are visible on the MapBuilder Topo's in Caltopo. It's a nice area with a few unique spots.

By my really old maps, cabin mtn trail starts as FS80 and now enters at the junction of the old FS80/big stone coal trail/ breathed mtn trail junction and continues all the way to what is now raven ridge trail. It is now referred to as Rocky Ridge Trail. Little stone coal trail continued from dukenbarger run trail on up to intersect cabin mtn trail. It looks like it intersected towards what is now the wildlife refuge area (now on private property, I think). The map I have is rather old and hard to read. It is from the WV highlands conservancy, but I printed off from the PATC website about 20 years ago I don't think it is on the site now. It lists it as Dolly Sods Area north of FS19, it does not refer to it as a wilderness area, so it may be before the wilderness status.

countryroads, Yep, that's a really old map that I remember also. As I noted, the trails are visible on the MapBuilder Topo layer in Caltopo at www.caltopo.com. The old road crosses back and forth from public to private land. Turn on the public ownership layers to see the boundaries.

Indeed there was a trail there once. FS abandoned it for some reason years ago. probably the wildlife refuge. I remember hiking it on one of my very early forays into the Sods. It was on the map published in the study for Wilderness designation, and that's how I found it. If you hike up Little Stonecoal to Dunkenbarger, bull your way through the Rhody thicket there and continue up the mountain. For a short distance, you can see where the old trail was, but it fades away quickly. there is supposed to be a bushwack that will take you up to what is designated Cabin Mountain trail in the WG network, but it is not marked, (there were some flags a long time ago, probably gone now). I've always wanted to try and follow that route again, but after so many years I can't imagine there is any trace of it.
