Okay, I was wrong - here is a site that makes an attempt at prediction but it probably just uses some averages. Missing from this map is any allowance for the higher elevations of the Appalachian Mountain chain so take that into consideration. Here is the WV Fall foliage site which has a map of predicted peak colors based on county lines - and we know how those colors just absolutely stick to political boundaries. I think things might be off a bit this year with the extremely wet September we've had.

Just checked my phone (IOS) and saw an app I had forgotten called Leaf Peepr - it lets folks submit reports by county on foliage conditions. And yes, it's spelled Peepr.

10/9
Nothing over here in the Potomac Highlands. Maples just turned a slight yellow and are dropping. Hickory turned brown and dropped. Oaks are still green. Drove all the way to Monterey VA today and it's all the same.
Supposed to cool off next week, maybe that will change things.

Northern WV - dogwoods are turning maroon, redbud going yellow. A few maples are showing some color but we're also getting premature leaf drop. I will see what the upcoming colder snap does.

Doesn't look good for this year. I was out on Red Run of Dry Fork yesterday (on the side of Canaan Mt) and everything was still green. Later we drove up to Dolly Sods and the lowlands were green, mid elevations were a dull, muted green and the highest elevations were bare. I got similar reports from a friend who rode the train at Cass to Bald Knob yesterday. We're looking at widespread frost within the week so some of the lower elevations may have some decent color but I suspect the rest is a lost cause this year.

The cool nights brought out a little color, but not much.
BTW, there was snow in the Sods today. Saw it from Petersburg and there was snow up at Bismark when I drove home this afternoon.

Even the Grand Canyon of PA still green with some dropped leaves. Fall color isn't working this year.

That's too bad. Pine Creek is usually pretty nice in the fall.

I was on North Fork Mt. south of Rt 33 yesterday. Leaves were just a bit better there. No bare trees and a bit of yellows. I've had 3 frosts at my place and a bit of snow Sunday morning. Canaan Valley had probably 1 1/2" on the ground when we drove through and NFM had some as we hiked up. Still don't think much color is going to happen this year.

Even the Grand Canyon of PA still green with some dropped leaves. Fall color isn't working this year. I was in Cross Fork hiking the weekend before last and it was completely bare already. It's very hit or miss from one place to the other.

A bit of a late surprise on Chestnut Ridge. A few non-rainy days and some frosts have helped and trees are turning. Yellows predominately but also some muted reds and oranges with an occasional brighter one. As usual the colors are more vivid on an overcast day. I figure Coopers Rock, Snake Hill WMA and Quebec Run should have a week or so of decent color if you want to get out and see them but there are bare areas so just look around a bit.

Time to wrap it up for this year. I was on the Big Savage Mt. Tr. in MD yesterday and the view from High Rocks was basically completely barren. However, later we drove through the Savage River drainage and did see some nice orange foliage deep in the various drainages, along Savage River itself, the Middle Fork and Dry Run. I suspect by this weekend it will all be gone. Not much of a year for foliage so now we can all get ready to tramp in the snow.

Well folks, it’s time to start our fourth year worth of fall foliage reports. Things seem to be turning just a little bit faster this year than the previous three. Chestnut Ridge is showing some decent yellows this year and the sumacs are going brilliant red. We had cool weather in late August and the very first of September and now the rest of September has turned pretty hot and dry. This has led to a decent early leaf drop. Any reports from other places around the Mid-Atlantic?

No one has commented yet so I'll add my own update. Yesterday I headed out for a hike. On the way out by dawn's light the yellows on Chestnut Ridge were quite nice. Not outstanding, but pretty nonetheless. Afterwards a buddy and I headed to Roaring Plains. We hiked the South Prong Trail and the Hidden Passage to the pipeline and back. Saw absolutely no one on the trail but there were quite a few bear hunters along the road and on the pipeline. Weather was gorgeous with sun early and clouds with a very light mist later. The wind blew strongly all day and with temps in the mid 60's it felt great. Colors were showing and were better as it clouded up. Again, yellows predominated with some reds and the occasional maroon. There were no panoramic vistas of color, just more close intimate views. Get out to the mountains folks, it's great out there. Don't bother with stream walks though, things are as dry as I've seen them.

Some of the high plateau up here in PA is starting to change. Along the roads things are really popping, although much of the regular woods are changing too once you get at elevation over 2000'. I was down in Quehanna this past weekend and things were getting solid down there as well. I'll be heading over to Pine Creek this weekend and I suspect Denton Hill will be in full color, not sure about Pine Creek yet as it's usually a week or two behind.

The maples are showing a lot of color over here on Cave Mountain this week. Not much of anything else yet.

Nice mix of color in the Watoga SP/northern Greenbrier Co, WV and Bath Co, VA - plenty of green yet with a good bit of reds, orange and yellow thrown in, even at lower elevations. Far better than last year at this time...

Oh - and the little guy in my avatar photo is now 11yo. He and I were out for a 3-day weekend (teacher workday on Monday), hiked into the old-growth area of Watoga SP (saw 3, incl 2 cubs), and a bit of the Allegeny Trail on Meadow Creek Mtn. Camped out in the forest north of Hwy. 39. Fantastic trip, very much recharged my batteries. Plenty of wild turkeys were around, as well.

I was in Garrett Co., MD and Somerset Co., PA on Saturday and the colors are starting to come alive. Still proably only at 20% but a lot of nice yellows out there. Chestnut Ridge in WV is also coming along better. Compared to last year this year is decent. Northern WV and western MD had a good rain yesterday morn so that may help also. I'll be in the mts. next Monday and will report back.
