Has anyone done a backpack in Dolly Sods during the late fall? How are the trails and temps at that time?

Tony,
Welcome. By late fall I assume you mean October or later. Temps can vary wildly from fairly warm with days in the 80's down to 20's at night. Be prepared for snow and windy or rainy conditions at all times but if you hit it well it's glorious. Trails are probably about the same as any other time but do your best to avoid Dobbin Grade - it's a mud hole all year long.

Someone local correct me if I'm wrong, but if it snows, I believe the Forest Service will close FR 75, which could be a problem if you are parked up there (just getting down that road if it were icy or snowy would be a problem, not even worrying about the gate). Pay close attention to the forecast.

Hi MRHyker! I've been lurking over on the other site for a while. We've been doing some hiking and I was waiting to post some trip reports until the forum switch. Then they switched and the format seems pretty bad. I'll get some posts up over here (and there, probably). I'll get an avatar up in the next few days.

These boards need some good trip reports to stimulate discussion. We've got a lot of members considering the short amount of time they have existed. I guess everyone is lurking.

Pay close attention to the forecast. FR75 is open this year from 4/15 until 12/31. I'm almost positive the FS doesn't close this due to snow - downed trees maybe. The road is open till the end of December for hunting seasons. You can check all of this on the Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM's). That's the only way they communicate this info any more.

As soon as I get in another hike in the region - not Dolly Sods per se (MD, VA, WV, PA, DE, NJ) I will post my first trip report on your new site. Hopefully this coming weekend

Thanks, Vdeal. I was under the impression that it was open until it snowed, but keeping it open for hunting season makes sense.

rpcv,
No problem, most people don't know about the MVUM's.

Unfortunately I've had issues with my feet for the better part of this past year. First I blew out my plantar in my right foot that precluded me from hiking for several months. Then I broke a toe in my left foot and I just got clearance yesterday from the doctor to start hiking again.
I'm dying for trail time.

I've grounded myself for over a month as we (the Doctors and I) tried to figure out what's with my "trail fatigue". With the change in weather I'm getting the itch bad. Going to the Roaring Plains next weekend come hell or high water!
