Two weekends ago I returned to the beautiful Adirondack High Peaks to backpack through the Giant Mountain Wilderness. While only 16 miles, the terrain was very rugged. We saw a semi-tame snowshoe hare, molting into white. It was an amazing experience and my first time seeing one. The long, powerful hind legs on the hare were impressive. We also encountered snow and ice on Giant Mountain, which slowed us down. Rime ice covered the stunted trees on Giant. The clouds broke to reveal amazing views in all directions. The ridge walk from Rocky Ridge Peak was incredible, with non-stop views, and even a mountaintop pond. The Adirondacks are such a special place that everyone should experience. It was great to be back.
