Hey all, Went to Cranberry Backcountry last weekend and need some help. While the sun was setting I saw this animal swimming in the creek. The sun was very bright and I couldn't get a good look but I did get this picture. Anyone have any idea what it is?

Well, the picture isn’t very good - all I can see is a black blob. I could be a bear cub, an otter (low chance, I don’t know of any in Cranberry), a beaver or a fisher. I’m gonna go with fisher. I guess there’s a chance it could be a mink or racoon also.

Yeah, the sun was right at the top of the mountain and was blindingly bright. I just stuck the camera out and kept pressing the button and hoping for the best. If he came by 10 minutes later, it would have been no problem....

I can't tell from the pic. Could be a beaver.

I guess next time I need to pack the telephoto lens. I hardly ever use it, but then something like this happens....

I poked around on the DNR site and Pocahontas County does indeed have an otter population. So... maybe.

Tough to tell but I'd go with an otter there. The coloration is spot on for an otter. Fishers are more of an upland ridge running critter. Mink have a more uniform coat with maybe a small white chest spot. Not the right shape for bear or beaver. I've trapped personally and professionally for the state and caught otters beaver and mink and I'd feel confident that you can claim to have seen an otter in the wild Congratulations there making a comeback and the state recently allowed a harvest on them. Might become more common throughout the state
