We spent the Memorial Day weekend visiting family in New Jersey. Yesterday morning, I wandered over to Manasquan Reservoir, in the hopes of catching a nice sunrise.
I had only taken a couple of photos of the sunrise when a great blue heron flew over to the shore line I was perched at. I've been toying with bird photography for a couple of years now, in a mostly unsuccessful way. I can never get 'close' enough to get a nice shot of a non run-of-the-mill bird - for me a heron is decidedly non run-of-the-mill. Yesterday morning, the New Jersey variety turned out to be much less skittish. It completely ignored me and the two of us danced for about 20min (I remained around 20+yds away, which was close enough for the 400mm lens I was using). I even saw it catch and eat - not release - two fish. Incidentally, I completely forgot about taking any more sunrise photos of the reservoir!
