Now that the NatGeo Topo is dead? I need something to put on my laptop.
Thanks.

You might still be able to find Nat Geo State Series on places like E-Bay. The problem is registering it. It won't run unless you do I believe. A friend knows of a work around. Let me know if you are interested and I'll put you in touch with him.

I've been using Google Earth, and use available overlays to add a topo map background, mainly the one from USGS and ARC/GIS. It all works, but I'd certainly like having a simpler way to do things, while keeping the KML formatting I have all my files in. (Especially since I manually edit them in EditPad rather than any GPS software.)

Another NG Topo! user here. I've been running it for years and currently run it on Mac OS X 10.10. Works fine. The great feature of Topo is freehand drawing. Very few other programs let you do that - they make you draw little segments by continually clicking at points on a path - PITA. One online program that does allow freehand drawing is Caltopo. Doesn't matter what OS you're running since it's web based and you can load various different maps and layer them. I'll keep using Topo as long as I can - even if it means using a VM. I have all of the Mid-Atlantic plus the Carolinas so I'm good to go around here. As MR says, the program is often available on eBay or Amazon but getting the existing installation to recognize the new ones is problematic. MR, I would like to know of the workaround just in case.

Yeah, I've got an old version of NatGeo that I paid for.
It's on my desktop. It works.
But I need something for my laptop. Not getting past the fact that Natgeo is dead and unsupported. Time to move on.

I don't think there is anything like it out there anymore except for what's on line. Vern, check your messages.

Just because it's dead and unsupported doesn't mean it's uselss - how often to topographic features change? Check out the Caltopo link, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Hey vdeal - late to the rodeo as usual, but thanks for the link to Caltopo. I also have NG Topo, but run Linux as an OS so I have to borrow a windows computer to run it. Caltopo looks to be an excellent replacement for it. Way more features than Topo, and much much better maps than the Garmin Basecamp. I am hoping the data can both be printed to true 7.5 minute size, and be saved for use offline. Sometimes I change my mind where I want to go and need to reload the GPS in the field to cover a new area. There'll be several beers spent playing around with this one. Thanks for the tip!

3pinner,
Glad to oblige. CalTopo should work well for you. As for Topo and Linux you should download a copy of VirtualBox and just run Windows in a VM on Linux. Works fine. You should be able to print maps to any size you want and you can save them as PDF's.
