Yes, check the MD map on www.midatlantichikes.com and check out the hikes in the Frederick Watershed. Not a bad drive, good parking, and great hiking. dottie

Patapsco Valley State Park, Avalon area ( accessed via RT 1 in Southwest Baltimore County) I t is paved but there are several loops that are unpaved. I go there several times a year and have found that fall is just about the best time. Beautiful foliage, especially if you go on the bridge spanning the river by Orange Grove.

One of my favorite stomping grounds is Catoctin/Cunningham Falls State Park just outside Thurmont. There are a lot of trails that allow you to make hikes of varying distances.

Harpers Ferry is always a great destination; it usually takes me about 1:15 to get there from Baltimore City.

Harpers Ferry is a great idea. You can access the C & O Towpath via the pedestrian bridge anchored to the railroad bridge. Great views of VA/ WVA from there. Lots of trains too, if you're into that.

Hemlock gorge near Hoffmansville is a sweet but short hike
