I drive a pig, so "if" prices stay low into next season, I hope to be able to make more backpacking trips.
I'm driving almost 600 miles round trip to my place in W.Va. Which is pretty much my base camp for my backpacking trips.

Gas prices have never been a factor for me. Won't change things one way or another and no, I don't drive a gas efficient vehicle.

It's not so much gas prices with me, more time off work and distance. Arfcomhkr, not sure how far into Ohio you live (I'm in the northern panhandle of WV)but when it takes 4-5 hours to get where you're going, that takes away from time on the trail.

But I have a place in Upper Tract (15 minutes from Petersburg). It's a 600 mile round trip, more or less. But when I go there I spend a week to ten days. It's kind of a base camp for our little group when backpacking in the area. Hot showers, cold beer, food, ect. So, it really doesn't take any time off the trail for me. I'm retired. It just gets costly making that drive a couple of times a month though. My truck has 4.56 gears in it and gets 12.5 mpg on a good day.

I usually travel with a gaggle of hikers and we split the costs so gas isn't much of an issue.
