Letchworth State Park waterfalls (Oct 1, 2022)I had a weekend that was packed full of fun and frolic. I began it on Saturday morning with the long 4.5hr (one-way) drive to Letchworth State Park, southeast of Buffalo, NY. This is an amazing state park, with three stunning waterfalls on the Genesee River (amongst others). Just as spectacular is the Genesee River gorge itself. I began with the Upper Falls, then moved downstream to the Middle Falls, the most impressive of the big three. I then walked beside the west rim until I was at the Lower Falls, and then back (~5mi roundtrip). I finished off by checking out the gorge from the Big Bend Overlook, and then drove home. It was October and the wapiti (elk) were in rut. The shrill sounds of bugling elk filled the air. Males chased after females and other males, although I did not catch an actual fight between two equals. Thrilling stuff. Eastern PhoebeLove is in the airGoldenrod and fall colors

How did I miss this post last year? Very nice photos. Letchworth is pretty much in my backyard and I go there a few times each year. If you ever go back, check out the eastern side of the park that has a ~25 mile trail with a bunch of scenic overlooks at the north and south ends. The middle portion is skippable unless you're determined to complete the entire trail; it's better to do two separate dayhikes from the Mount Morris Dam and Portageville entrances IMO.
Although it's not elk mating season right now, I may stop at that Winslow Hill viewing area between hiking and kayaking adventures this upcoming weekend. Haven't spent too much time in PA since last November when I hit a deer on my way to Ricketts Glen.

For Letchworth, I looked at the trails on the east rim, but opted for the west rim. Next timeā¦
