I'm going up Columbus day weekend to Sinnemahoning State Park to see elk. Anyone have any tips?

It's likely going to be crowded around Benezette where the biggest part of the herd is. Your smartest move is to avoid the traffic on Winslow Hill at peak times (like 4 PM to sunset) if it all possible unless you want to be stuck in it for a while. Be considerate and bring binoculars and try to park at established viewing areas; a lot of the locals get annoyed by the tourists tramping into their yards to get photos of the elk. It's probably slightly better to travel west to east on Winslow Hill traffic-wise, which is opposite of how you'd come from Sinnemahoning.
There's a decent herd in the Wharton/Sinnemahoning SP area now so be on the lookout by Stevenson Dam and heading north. It's a much quieter area. There are a lot of nice hikes in that area on State Forest trails.
Another herd is supposedly closer to Karthaus down the Quehanna Highway, but I have never visited and seen them. But the trails up along Quehanna are great. There's a good chance colors will still be out up on the plateau although they may be past peak. Still, the valleys should be gorgeous.
The whole area is beautiful and whether you're going to try to squeeze some hikes in or not, will be well worth a visit. From Sinnemahoning SP area, you can travel up Brooks Run if it's open and hit Ridge Rd, which has a number of really nice overlooks. I also like driving the dirt roads up and over toward Cross Fork and up toward Coudersport even. There's just so much to see, even if the elk aren't as likely to be over there. If you want a nice day trip, 120 over to Hyner View is spectacular and some elk are known to be over that way.

Thanks! We are actually staying at Sinnemahoning, it would be nice to find the herd away from the crowds. Still thinking about how to fit dayhikes in. Hyner view is a good idea, we was also thinking of taking a day to hit the Lumber Museum then try to get night sky pictures at Chery Springs. There are a lot of great things to do around there.

I second the Quehanna Wild Area. Lots of beautiful trails and I've seen elk there several times. Check out the Hoover Farm wildlife viewing area.

It's a really beautiful area, one of my favorites. And unlike other destinations, not crowded, except for some places during elk viewing season. Be sure to hike the Fred Woods Trail, see the Bucktail Overlook, and Ridge Rd has several great vistas, as anfhiker suggests. Sinnemahoning State Park has an impressive, new visitor center.
