Mid Atlantic Hikes has been my go-to resource for 10-15 years. Mike has some of the best and most comprehensive maps and write-ups (but a bit dated) out there FOR FREE! I just came here and joined to find out what has happened with the site being down. I'd be happy to contribute to keep the site up another year or beyond. I'm also happy to do some digging to see if I can't find out about Mike's wife or his Estate and whether we can buy the domain from her/them (I'm an estate lawyer so very familiar with this). I'd love to keep the site going in Mike's honor, like the Sheldon Brown bicycling site.

Looks like the site is down again (seems a little early?). And you can indeed pay for its domain renewal. If no one does it, I’ll do it again. Looks like you can do a maximum of 10 years too haha.

yes as of 3/25 it is listed as expired. There is a link to contact the owner but don't know if it would be functional. However a copy of the site can be accessed through WaybackMachine. A link is here: web.archive.org/web/20230926115303/http://midatlantichikes.com/It would of course be better to have the site up, functional and updated. That's a bit beyond my 'pay grade' though. doubledog - thanks for the effort

One of the people in this thread said they knew his son...if that's the case, it may not be too difficult to get in touch with the family. Hopefully someone would be willing to let the site be taken care of so it doesn't disappear as a great source of info forever.

It gave me the option to renew, so I went ahead and paid for it myself for a year. I wasn't sure if the full site would load back or not, but it's back up for me as of 4/1.
And no this is not an April fools joke.

And no this is not an April fools joke. So, I might be missing something, but I am not able to get to the main site. DNS isn't working for midatlantichikes.com (I assume this is the domain you were attempting to renew). I'm sad to see this because this has been my go-to resource for years, and I was unaware M.R. Hyker (Mike Juskelis) had passed. I do see there was some activity around domain registration renewal/change around the end of March (checking WHOIS information), but of course, the ownership is obscured by tucows. I too would be delighted to contribute to keep the site alive (I have a pretty fair bit of hosting know-how as well), or to undertake hosting. If I had been quicker on the draw, I would have scraped the whole thing while it was still up and patched things up to host it under different domain ownership. Is anybody able to load it? NM - I see the renewal was for the forum, not the main site.

Darn, I guess I only renewed the domain and the IP renewal has lapsed. The main site was back up for about a week I guess.

I chatted with someone from the domain company I renewed from. Apparently the error the site is currently giving is because the servers that connect to the site are no longer working. I take this to mean that wherever Mike had stored the site servers has been turned off, disabled, or expired. Unless someone can get in contact with Mike's family and get the site data transferred, I don't know if we can get it back. This is not my area of expertise, but that's my understanding. Most of the site can still be viewed via the wayback machine: web.archive.org/web/20230101000000*/http://www.midatlantichikes.com/

Such sad news Sadly Mr. Juskelis has passed away- I am acquainted with his son, who hopes to keep the dreams alive. One can only hope to keep the main site, and this forum running! I believe some kind of book release in his memorial will be coming soon! Hopefully you read this. We could use your help…
