Has anyone hiked this section in the past few years?? I recently scouted the section from Gaudineer to John's Camp shelter about a month or so ago, and found that section in very good condition with newer yellow painted blazes.
I'm planning on doing the section from John's Camp Run to High Fall trail and down to FR44 in a couple weeks, as a day hike, and was wondering if this section was in as good a shape as the section I had already hiked?
I'm looking at about 3/4 mi. to the Johns Camp shelter, about 8mi or so to Wildell shelter, and about 2mi to the high falls trail, then the mile or so off the Mtn. so somewhere near about 12mi?

jnk, It's been several years since I've been up there so I can't help on current trail conditions. I think hikeer on this board was there recently. I can't really figure out your route. Are you using two vehicles? How are you getting out with just a mile from High Falls?

I have someone picking me up on FR 44 at high falls trailhead. It's not that far from the saddle at the top of shavers down to FR44, maybe mile and a half?

With the caveat that this was three four years ago, that section was in very good shape at the time with one notable exception. There was a section roughly 1/4 to 1/3 mile long that was a brier patch. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't fun either. Otherwise the trail was in good condition and well marked.

I'm going to assume this was the section that had been logged a few years back, somewhere above Willdell? Was the trail hard to follow in any sections? Being as I'll be doing this after the first freeze and frosts, I'm hoping some of the brush will have died back. I remember your journey now, weren't you the one who hung his clothes to dry in the toilet on Gaundineer?

Lol, yeah that was me. I don't recall the trail being hard to follow at all in that section, it was pretty evident where it was, it was just overgrown in places with thorns.

Yeah sometime in the past 5-8 years they did maintainance on that section as I hiked up to the willdell shelter back then, and I ended up walking past the shelter the brush was so bad!it was horribly marked and overgrown, on that end way back when anyways. Since then I have hiked a few miles past John's camp run, scouting, and i did that section from gaudineer to John's camp shelter a month or so ago. Now I just need to fill in the gap in between.

jnk,
Got you on the hike out. I thought you meant one mile from the falls. For what it's worth the last time I did that I do recall the section between Johns camp and Wildell taking quite a while with several ups and downs.
I once did a loop from Gaudineer to Wildell and down to the High Falls. From the high falls we hiked 14 miles south on the railroad (this was when it was non-active) to a place where it was close to FS 481 (I believe) and had a heck of a time thrashing through the rhodos and then I walked 3 miles on the road to get to the car and go back and get my buddy. Railroad walking is not fun but it was interesting.

Yeah, I know the section between shelters is kinda up and down, as you cross one top and down and back up.... It's a pretty isolated section, I mean there is nothing out on that 8 mi between shelters, and there's no water either. I'll be packing a bladder with me, and cool temps so water won't be a issue. I really wanted to do this with a buddy as a overnighter using the willdell shelter, but no one will go with me so I go alone!
